American Travelers 1898-1916
This gallery provides an overview, using maps, of the 16th U.S. Infantry’s involvement in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection, 1898-1907. During this period, the Regiment participated in a number of campaigns, battles, and skirmishes in both Cuba and the Philippines. In addition to its service overseas, the 16th Infantry also served at a number of posts across the United States and Alaska between 1902 and 1916. These installations stretched literally from coast to coast and included locations in the Midwest, the Northeast, and the South as well. As during the Indian Wars period, the regiment was sometimes split between various posts and at others, it was consolidated at a single location. These maps are intended to provide the viewer with a better understanding of the 16th Infantry’s participation in those events but not necessarily a complete understanding of every movement made by the Regiment on the occasions represented.
